bosch_e_a000463541There are two main ways of detecting smoke by smoke alarms: photoelectric and ionization.

According to the researches, photoelectric smoke alarms have greater efficiency in detecting smoldering fires and fires that start in areas remote from smoke alarms. Ionization smoke alarms help better with detecting flaming fires.

Since the fires very often occur in buildings where people sleep, fire brigades recommend placing photoelectric smoke alarms in corridors between sleeping areas and exits to the open air.

Some smoke alarms can also measure the levels of carbon monoxide. They usually emit sounds to alert occupants of fire. Other methods of alerting include emitting emergency lights, special models for kitchens and relocatable homes and alarms for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired.
