All burglar alarm systems can be broadly categorized into 2 main groups:
• Bells only alarms
• Monitored alarm system
These two types can be available as hard-wired or wireless security systems.
Bells only burglar alarms - when one of the alarm components triggers the alarm, an outside bell or siren is activated. The sounds will let the burglar know that he’s been detected and may encourage him to leave.
The mere presence of an alarm system may also scare the burglar away.
However, nowadays when many houses have installed burglar alarms, people who hear the noise may choose to ignore it.
If the monitored alarm system is used, the activation of the burglar alarm sends signal to a pre-selected list of telephone numbers (the owner’s cell phone, family, neighbors) and to the monitoring center.
The telephone autodialler used in the monitored alarm system is suitable for home and small commercial installations as it provides the minimal cost of installation and annual service, although it assumes that the person at answers the call reacts appropriately to the alarm activation.
The monitoring center provides the highest security, though it is very expensive both for installation and annual service.
When choosing the burglar alarm, consider the fact that the reaction of the Police to the burglar alarm activation will depend on its type.
Wireless burglar alarms had an unreliable reputation in the past, and they found it difficult to get rid of it.
The huge diversity and amount of wireless alarms on the market show that because of strong improvement they are now much more reliable than in the past, moreover, their reliability is no less than the reliability of the hard-wired ones.
